The publication was authored by a Ukrainian researcher and focuses on the food culture in the Medieval period. The book tells a story of Medieval food which could be used as both poison and medicine, sin and virtue.
The original banqueting recipes help recreate an atmosphere at the Medieval court – dishes with fire breathing peacock and chicken; pies with live birds inside; meat dishes seasoned with sugar, lampray, and dolphins.
The book also debunks many myths associated with the Medieval diet – the issue of meat and whether it was really excluded from the diet of peasant and ordinary city folk, and the benefits of wine and beer as compared to drinking plain water especially for children.
And finally, the reader will discover the long gone elaborate Medieval dishes and some of the most popular recipes which continue to live on till this day.
